Penffrwd Fach

Aberystwyth | 2022

The Jenkins Family have owned the cottage Penffrwd Fach and the adjacent farmhouse Penffrwd for as long as anyone can remember. On the 1911 census both properties were occupied but at some point, during the 20th Century, Penffrwd Fach was abandoned as a residence.

Aled’s original brief was for an extension to add a bedroom and bathroom to the original cottage. Our proposal, which was met with support from the planning authority, was to break these two volumes apart to create a glazed link between the original building and the proposed extension to better articulate the new from the old.

The interior merges traditional and modern styles, using natural materials such as the original stone featured in the hallway and behind the roll top bath with large expanses of glass and timber panelling to provide warmth, colour and texture.

Penffrwd Fach is a lovingly renovated, two-bedroom cottage on the banks of The River Rheidol.
